BLACK COHOSH

BENEFITS:

Relieves the unpleasant symptoms of menopause.

DESCRIPTION:

Black cohosh (Actea or Cimicifuga racemosa) is a plant used in herbal medicine to alleviate the unpleasant effects of menopause. These can be both physical (hot flushes, sleep disturbances, sweating, etc.) and psychological (irritability, nervousness, mood swings, anxiety, etc.). Black cohosh is also recognised by the WHO for its effect on menopause-related hot flushes and sleep disturbances.

Its roots and rootstocks (underground stalks) notably contain triterpene glycoside, phenolic acid and alkaloids. Studies on black cohosh have demonstrated the role of these active ingredients in regulating the hormonal and nervous systems, specifically hormone and neurotransmitter synthesis, which is key to emotional balance and getting hot flushes under control.

DID YOU KNOW?

The name "Cimicifuga" originates from the Latin “cimex”, meaning “bug”, and “fugare”, meaning “to chase away”. As its name indicates, this plant was historically used as insect repellant. That’s why black cohosh is sometimes known as black bugbane.

CONTRAINDICATION AND WARNINGS :

Black cohosh is a widely-tolerated plant with almost no risk of major side effects. However, in rare cases (intolerance or overdose), potential undesirable effects may arise, such as gastrointestinal issues, feelings of heaviness in the legs, headaches or dizziness.

Consuming black cohosh is not recommended if you have liver disease or a history of hormone-dependent cancer. In order to avoid any interactions, if you are taking any medication or undergoing any medical treatment, please seek the advice of a doctor or pharmacist before taking black cohosh.
