VITAMIN E

DESCRIPTION:

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin stored in the body, particularly in muscle and adipose tissue.

ROLE:

Vitamin E is most widely known for its primary role as a powerful antioxidant, counteracting free radicals to protect cells from oxidation and premature ageing. As a result, this vitamin most notably works to keep your skin looking fresh and prevent cardiovascular disease. It can also have immune and anti-inflammatory benefits.

      SOURCES:

Being fat-soluble, vitamin E is found in lipid-rich foods such as vegetable oils (particularly sunflower, peanut, wheat germ and soybean oils), oilseeds (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, etc.), butter and oily fish (salmon, herring, sardines, etc.), among other sources.

      DID YOU KNOW ?

Because of its strong antioxidant properties, vitamin E is often used as a preservative in processed foods (under names ranging from E306 to E309) to keep food from spoiling.

      SUPPLEMENTS & CONTRAINDICATIONS:

Since vitamin E is well stored within the body, cases of deficiency are relatively rare. However, your required amount of vitamin E may be much higher if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, suffering from a chronic condition, or an athlete or smoker. An overdose of vitamin E has little known effect.
